Problem: a recent poll by NPR/Ipso revealed that 80% of U.S. parents wish their kids were learning about climate change.

Solution: in November 2019, Adventerra Games North America launched four board games. Global Warning, Recycle Rally, PowerHaus and WaterGame (all $24.95 MSRP) offer a fun way to empower families to take positive actions to slow climate change. Plus, the games “walk the talk” and are made of sustainable materials. Find them at https://adventerragamesusa.com/.

This family-owned company publishes engaging board games that help kids and their families learn to conserve natural resources and save the planet. — In just a few months their games promoting environmental stewardship have captured 14 national toy industry awards. Academics’ Choice, Tillywig, Hot Diggity Awards, National Parenting Product Awards (NAPPA) and PAL Award happily shared online why they adore this new STEM series. All four games also were certified by STEM.org, whose Authenticated™ Trustmark identifies resources that conform to vetted STEM standards.

“In the PowerHaus Game,” begins one of many glowing reviews by NAPPA, “logical methods to save energy are presented and players are encouraged to make new habits (e.g., turn off the water when you brush your teeth, put on a sweater instead of turning up the heat, hang laundry to dry rather than use the dryer) and to make good choices. There are a lot of math skills in this game, which is a great bonus.”

“Want to pick up your conservation IQ while swimming down a beautiful river?” begins the PAL Award congratulatory description for WaterGame. “Join in this fun family game of gaining and losing water filled with competition as well as cooperation. Players advance down the river based on ‘Savings’ or ‘Wasting’ cards, while absorbing tips on how to be good stewards of our water.”

Many of the toy judges were parents who sat at the kitchen table with their sons and daughters. Commented one Academics’ Choice mom after playing Global Warning, “I think I learned more about the earth’s problems than my kids did… This game gave us so many facts about the problems of our earth today, it was a bit disturbing. Interestingly enough though, after playing the game, my kids wanted to check and make sure there was no paper or cardboard in the garbage can. I think they got the message!”

The Hot Diggity Awards offers parents an answer to what makes this Hot Diggity great? For Recycle Rally, the response is intuitive and instructional. “Adventerra Games took the fundamentals of a board game and applied it to everyday life teaching children and their parents about the importance of sorting garbage and recycling. Rules are simple, with an alternate version for older kids and all board game components are sturdy with whimsical illustrations. Kids can apply what they learn from this board game to how they sort trash at home.”

No raincoat or umbrella is needed to play this game that shows youngsters the value of clean water. Can you save your community’s water from the water monster? Navigate the river to save as much as possible and help your neighbors. WaterGame is very simple but provides a wealth of information on saving water and our planet. Cards with simple and intuitive illustrations show the correct habits to adopt to save water in everyday life. Throughout their journey down the river, players answer quiz questions about water and move forward or back depending on their answers. Unlucky players must rely on the Community Water Tank, which depends on donations from players who have saved more water. If the tank is empty when someone needs it, everyone loses. For ages 7 and up, and fun for the whole family to play together! Ideal for 3 to 4 players. Play can be completed in about 30 minutes.

Uh oh! Your town is overflowing with unrecycled trash. You and your friends race with your trucks through the streets to collect recyclables, and then bring them to the right recycling centers. Players compete as individuals, earning points by achieving their missions, recycling the most precious and the most dangerous objects. At the same time, the team objective is to work together to minimize the objects that are left behind – because if more than 24 items end up in the incinerator at the end of the game, all players lose. The game teaches children how to properly separate recyclables and the importance of doing so. You can customize the game board by choosing the colors of the bins used in your city. Cool. The rules also feature an advanced game mode, recommended for ages 10 and up. Recycle Rally is perfect for 3 to 5 players. The game lasts about 45 minutes.
